In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, British artist Damon Albarn — best known as the lead vocalist of bands Blur and Gorillaz — stated that Taylor “doesn’t write her own songs,” to which Taylor quickly responded on Twitter.

Taylor Swift is known for her re-recorded old albums and released Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version), receiving widespread accolades for reclaiming artistic control over her previous work.

With Red (Taylor’s Version), she shattered Spotify streaming records, and she’s hoping to repeat the feat with re-issues of Taylor Swift, Speak Now, 1989, and, eventually, Reputation. Overall, she is not allowing anyone to diminish her efforts.

In response to a tweet from the Los Angeles Times regarding Damon’s interview, Taylor wrote, “I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this. I write ALL of my own songs.”

“Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really f***ed up to try and discredit my writing. WOW,” Swift added. “PS I wrote this tweet all by myself in case you were wondering,”

Swift showed up in the Los Angeles Times interview after Damon said that most of the musicians nowadays are “relying on sound and attitude” rather than their songwriting abilities.

Damon was challenged by the interviewer, who stated that Taylor “of course” writes and co-writes her songs.

However, “that doesn’t count. I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing. I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes,” Damon explained.

“A really interesting songwriter is Billie Eilish and her brother. I’m more attracted to that than to Taylor Swift. It’s just darker — less endlessly upbeat,” he added.

Following Taylor’s enraged tweet, Damon swiftly apologized, saying, “I totally agree with you. I had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait. I apologise unreservedly and unconditionally. The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting. I hope you understand,” he wrote.
